Tu be'Shevat and Adam HaRishon

Photo: Miriam Woelke
B"H

According to Chassidut Breslov, “The New Year of the Trees - Tu be’Shevat” is the day where Jews have the power to rectify the sin of Adam HaRishon. How ? By showing the proper Kavanah while eating the traditional Tu be’Shevat fruit. Furthermore, by saying all the necessary blessings over the fruit.

It was Adam HaRishon who mostly influenced the history of the world. Still in Gan Eden (Paradise), Adam and his wife Chava (Eve) were mean to live eternally. Adam’s only G – dgiven task was not to eat from the “Tree of Knowledge – Etz HaDa’at Tov veRah”. He was the only human being formed by G – d Himself whereas all other beings originated from Adam. It is basically unknown how the first human really looked. When I am saying the first human being, I refer to Adam HaRishon, as he was the first one created having a soul.

Before the sin with the tree (whatever the sin really was), Adam included all souls. Including the highest souls ever which enabled him to live eternally. After the sin, Adam and Eve became mortal, as the highest sould were taken from them. Since the following generations and, with Avraham, the Jews, have the task to rectify Adam’s sin. There are things in this world which can be used in a negative sense but also in a positive sense. Example: Wine. We can get drunk or use wine for holy purposes and thus elevate him. When making Kiddush, for instance. One opinion is that, as soon as we finished rectifying Adam’s sin, Meshiach is going to come. However, there are other opinions too (see Talmud Sanhedrin 97 – 99).

Tu be’Shevat is the possibility consuming fruit in a proper way and thus make it better than Adam.

The Breslover Shalom Arush Movement and the German speaking donation Market

B"H

The below pictures shows us why the Sephardi Breslover Ba'al Teshuva Rabbi Shalom Arush set up a German speaking "team". German speaking Jews stand for "donations".

For many years, Israeli Rabbis used to go on donation trips to England, the US, Canada or maybe even Australia but who wasted a thought on the German "market" ? No one. Now plenty of chassidic groups such as Vishnitz (Rabbi Menachem Mendel Hager) from Bnei Brak have discovered the Swiss Jews with all of their cash. A great and fresh source of donations. Rabbi Shalom Arush got a German speaker in his group and many of the Rabbi's books (e.g. "The Garden of Emunah) were translated into the German language. The Arush group even launched a German speaking website where everything seems to be more Arush but less Rabbi Nachman.

The Arush circle is not too accepted among the Mea Shearim neighbours, as Arush takes in many followers with a criminal background. Weirdo guys who now look at Rabbi Arush as Rabbi Nachman. Not like the Na Nach movement believing that the soul of Rabbi Nachman had entered their former leader Rabbi Israel Odesser.

However, Rabbi Shalom Arush appears to be more important on his websites as he actually is. I just find it disgusting how the Arush guys have entered the German donation market and tell some I don't know what stories on their website. It doesn't look like Breslov and Rabbi Nachman but Arush's own cult and ideas.

Mission successful: The Beit Midrash and Synagogue of Rabbi Shalom Arush in Jerusalem (HaNevi'im Street) underwent a complete renovation process. Lots of donations must have come in.

TV - Report: Breslover Chassidim at Aharon's Grave

B"H

As an addition to my article about the Breslover Chassidim dressing up as secular Jews in order to travel to Aharon's grave in Jordan: HERE is the TV - Report broadcasted on the Israeli TV news. The report is in Hebrew only !

Breslover Chassidim dress up as seculars and travel to Aharon's grave in Jordan

A dressed up Breslover at Aharon's grave

 B"H

Tonight, the Israeli TV channel two news had an interesting report:
Several younger Breslover Chassidim in their 20ies were planning a trip to Aharon's grave in Jordan. The only problem was that Jordan is not too excited about letting religious Jews into the country who intend to pray at a certain site. Even if it is the grave of Moshe's brother Aharon.

The Chassidim had the idea to dress up as secular Israelis. A baseball hat covering the Peyes (sidecurls) and Kipot, for instance. The guys wore colourful shirts and if I had met them in the street I would have thought they were secular. Although the TV channel mentioned Mea Shearim as the place where they come from, I couldn't believe that. The Chassidim looked like unmarried Ba'alei Teshuva who truly knew the secular lifestyle. Ashkenazim and Sepharadim together.

Strange but when I look at the photos from my report last year, everything looks exactly the same as in the TV report tonight. Even the young Jordanian guide.

However, the Breslovers got to Aharon's grave near Petra in Jordan. The Kever is located up on a mountain and you can basically only get to the top when you "rent a donkey". All of them were riding up and the to Jordanian travel guides couldn't believe their eyes when the Breslovers suddenly took off their baseball hats, shook out their Peyes and started dancing, singing and praying around the grave. Several times they asked whether those wild guys are really Jews.

Personally I don't always believe that a Kever of a Zaddik is the true grave but rather a legend. The same with Kever Aharon: Honestly, I don't believe that it is Aharon's grave but, as a blog reader once commentated - "It all depends on the Jewish tradition. Even if there is no proof for the original grave, Jews still pray at a grave when they have done so for hundreds of years".
Example: Kever Rachel outside Bethlehem.

Jewish Taliban Girls

These photos published in a haredi forum show the junction Mea Shearim Street / Shivtei Israel. However, I don't think that the two children in the photo belong to Chassidut Toldot Aharon owning the property right next to where the kids walk. I rather assume that the covered Taliban looking girl and her brother belong to the Ba'alei Teshuva movement from Breslov. Those people mainly live in one of the streets across where they also have their own school.

I have seen you a few girls whose Breslov Ba'al Teshuva mother is raising them by wearing thick scarfs and a bundle of Taliban clothes. There are two young sister in the Nachlaot neighbourhood wearing the same kind of clothing.

Breslover Nana Music

B"H

The message of the Breslover Nanas in this video is: "Rak Lismoach kol Hazman veMechayech - Be happy all the time and smile !" Even if you are sad or depressed try to smile and be happy and eventually you may be happy.

The Nanas (Na Nach Nachma Nachman Me'Uman and followers of Rabbi Israel Odesser z"l) are a little neglected and seen as the hippies of the Breslov movement. The original Breslovers consider anyone from the outside and pretending to be a Breslover Chassid as not acceptable. However, the Nanas are around everywhere and still singing their Mantra "Na Nach Nachma Nachman Me'Uman".

Nana - Breslovers and Zion Square / Jerusalem

Photo: Miriam Woelke

B"H

Not only Chabad is "on the road" in Israel but also the Breslover - Nana Chassidim. For quite a few years, the two guys in the photo have been standing in Jerusalem's shopping mall Ben Yehudah Street selling their Nana - Music CDs as well as stickers and books.

In the background you can see the newly designed Zion Square with the brandnew nine floor building where the department store "Hamashbir" is going to move in.

The guy sitting on the little motorbike and talking to the two Nanas started yelling at me when I took the photo. The reason was that he wanted money but, of course, didn't get any.:-)

Breslover Nana - Chassidim celebrating Israel's Independence

B"H

As every year on Independence Eve (Erev Yom Ha'azma'ut), the freaky Breslover Na Nana Nachma Nachman - Chassidim drove through Tel Aviv's secular Dizengoff Street. The Chassidim stopped their van in the middle of the street and started dancing and jumping.

Here some of the photos I made:

Shabbat Shalom

Breslover Chassidim in Downtown Tel Aviv.

B"H

Sometimes I need the feeling that I am still alive ! Besides religion, creativity is giving me this feeling and where in Israel do you find more creativity than in Tel Aviv ? Not always in a positive way, as Mea Shearim faints as soon as the word "Tel Aviv" appears. Argghhh, sin city. Nevertheless, anyone looking for positive actions will also find them here.

I have noticed that I still have many hits on my articles about the Gerrer runaway Sarah Einfeld and I have been thinking about calling her up in order to ask her for an update. Last night, I was checking my e - mails on Gmail and suddenly I found Sarah chatting with me. She said she is fine and still alive. Hopefully we will meet some time next week or, at least soon. It is not that I feel the urge writing about her, as I do understand her. She used her free choice and is happy with it. When we meet next time it is probably more talking about private matters than the intention of preparing an article. However, I am going to write a short follow up on her.

"Shabbat Shalom - Gut Schabbes" to everyone !

Ruth Blau (Bloi) & Yossele (Yoseph) Schuchmacher

B”H

I am going to describe the “Yossele Schuchmacher” case according to Ruth Blau’s book “Shomrei Ha’Ir – Guardians of the City” as well as Isser Harel’s book “Mivzah Yossele - Operation Yossele”. When Yossele Schuchmacher was kidnapped, Isser Harel happened to be the Mossad director and in 1962, Prime Minister David Ben Gurion himself ordered the Mossad to get involved and find the child Yossele. The case of the kidnapped boy surely rocked the entire nation.

Ruth Blau (formerly “Ruth ben David”) doesn’t mention too many names in her book. However, Isser Harel writes that it was the previous Neturei Karta head, Rabbi Katzenellenbogen, who asked Ruth to take Yossele abroad. Rabbi Katzenellenbogen together with Rabbi Eliyahu Meizish (who used to be very friendly with Ruth).

It is not really clear to me whether the Rabbi's name was MEIZISH or MEISEL(S). There are different versions in the books and maybe one of the readers can contribute some information !
Moreover, Isser Harel writes that Yossele’s kidnapping took place with the knowledge of the former Satmarer Rebbe Yoel Teitelbaum.

Isser Harel describes the background from his point of view:
In 1957, the Schuchmacher family made Aliyah to Israel from Poland. Countless other sources claim that the Schuchmachers’ actually made Aliyah from Russia. Even Ruth Blau said so. However, Isser Harel said POLAND.

Alter and Ida Schuchmacher, together with their two children, made Aliyah. Their daughter Sina then was nine years old and their son Yossele (Yoseph) was four years old. The Jewish Agency first sent them to Nahariya; afterwards the family moved to Holon (near Tel Aviv). In those days, there was neither any “Nefesh be’Nefesh” nor received new immigrants lots of financial help. This only came into existence much later.

The Schuchmachers’ were facing a hard time getting adjusted to their new country. Thus no one was surprised that they were also in dire straits.
Only a short while before the Schuchmachers made Aliyah, Ida Schuchmacher’s parents Nachman and Miriam Starkes had moved to Israel; together with with Ida’s brother Shalom. They made Aliyah from Poland but seemed to have lived before in the Soviet Union.

The Starkes also had an older son with the name Ovadiah. However, he had moved to England where he worked as a Shochet in a haredi community in London.
Nachman Starkes and his two sons (Shalom and Ovadiah) were very strict Haredim and members of Chassidut Breslov. The real old Breslovers and not the modern Baalei Teshuva movement we see today !

Nachman Starkes found his way to Jerusalem and settled in Mea Shearim. His son Shalom became a Yeshiva student. In the meantime, the Schuchmachers’ arrived and due to their financial difficulties, they decided to give their son Yossele to the Starkes in Mea Shearim. His sister Sina was sent to Kfar Chabad (near Rishon LeZion). After a while, Alter and Ida Schuchmacher found an apartment in Holon and also jobs. They decided to get their children back home and be a real family. Just like in the days before they came to Israel. Thus, with the beginning of the new school year of 1959, they enrolled their children in a religious school in Holon. Daughter Sina returned to her parents and afterwards, the Schuchmacher’s went to Jerusalem in order to pick up Yossele. Then, Yossele had already been six years old.

Ida and Alter Schuchmacher were shocked when they heard that Ida’s parents, the Starked refused handing them over their son Yossele. A huge dispute arouse between them and Ida Schuchmacher tried anything in order to change the mind of her parents. Nachman Starkes claimed that Holon is a place of secular Jews and therefore, Yossele cannot receive the religious education he now is used to. Ida Schuchmacher said that the children were enrolled in religious schools but no argument helped. Starkes refused, as those religious schools belonged to the National Religious Movement. Under those conditions, Nachman Starkes was not prepared to give in and decided that young Yossele is staying where he is; in Mea Shearim. Soon after, Yossele disappeared from their home and was hidden at a different Mea Shearim location.
In January 1960, Ida and Alter Schuchmacher went to a rabbinic court in Tel Aviv but Ida’s father Nachman didn’t show up in court. Due to his weak health, so he claimed. The Schuchmachers’ didn’t know what to do and made an appeal to the Great Rabbinic Court of the State of Israel. Nachman Starkes still hid the boy and Yossele’s parents were not allowed to see him. The lawyer of the Schuchmacher family claimed that Starkes may take Yossele out of the country. Maybe to Ovadiah Starkes in London.
On February 10, 1960, Israel’s Supreme Court and the Rabbinic Court decided that Nachman Starkes must return the child Yoseph Schuchmacher to his parents until February 15. Nachman Starkes, however, refused announcing the Yossele’s whereabouts and the child was not returned. Again, the Schuchmachers’ went to the Supreme Court. This time, the court decided to get Nachman Starkes arrested. He would be in jail until he is telling where Yossele is hidden.

Nachman Starkes rather wanted to go to jail than giving up on the boy. In the meantime, the case had turned into a public matter and the first journalists arrived in order to make interviews. Nachman Starkes told everyone that his daughter Ida and his son – in – law Alter are about to leave Israel and move to Communist Russia. This way, Starkes planned to influence even the secular world that Yossele may be in danger by moving to Russia. You have to take into consideration the times: Then Russia was the biggest enemy of the Western world and its secularism was well – known. How then could a child be brought back into such a country ?

Starkes regarded his acts as a big Mitzvah; saving Yossele from the secular world and giving him a Torah education. Nachman Starkes told everyone how much a religious Jew is suffering in secular Russia. Especially under the Communist regime. This is the reason why he himself escaped from there. He claimed that in Russia, one cannot live as a religious Jew but may be send to Siberia. The Russian themselves had tortured him when he expressed his will of leaving the country.

The case Yoseph “Yossele” Schuchmacher became File No. 60 – 720. The police were officially searching for the child and handed out fully descriptions to the public. People who knew Nachman Starkes were asked to come in for investigation. The police department launched a special unit with the intention of checking out all acquaintances of Nachman Starkes and thus finding the place where Yossele was hidden. Furthermore, the police took influential people from haredi society to Nachman Starkes in order talk to him and convince him to release the child. Without any result.
It turned out to be extremely hard searching all the small alleyways in Mea Shearim. All the small houses and cellars. The inhabitants stuck together and were not of any help. Everyone tried to find Yossele: Cops, agents, journalists and it must have been a weird and always suspicious atmosphere in Mea Shearim. However, the Starkes made the claim that Yossele himself didn’t want to return to his parents.

On May 12, 1960, the Supreme Court decided that the police have to continue the search for Yossele. No matter what. Even with force. Sometimes it looked as if the police gave in because there were violent acts on both sides and the police wanted to avoid any violence.

Starkes’ lawyer claimed that his client could no longer be in jail due to his bad health. The Schuchmachers’ now now also demanded the arrest of Nachman’s son Shalom because he would act while his father was imprisoned.

In June 1960, the “Agudat Israel” Knesset member Shlomo Lorenz tried to negotiate between the Starkes and the Schuchmachers. In the meantime, Ida and Alter Schuchmacher announced that Yossele would study in a Yeshiva as soon as he was released from his hiding place. The parents even agreed to sign a letter where it says that they would not take the boy outside the country.

On June 8, 1960, the Knesset discussed the issue how the police should act and continue the search. Many religious Knesset members, however, took the side of Nachman Starkes. For instance, Knesset member Yaakov Katz called Nachman Starkes’ intentions of saving the child “pure”. The Knesset stated that every Israeli citizen has the right to raise his child when the education doesn’t have a bad influence on the health and well – being of the child. Those groups supporting Nachman Starkes insisted on the Torah; and according to the Torah, Nachman Starkes is right. Mea Shearim considered itself as a “country within a country” and asked the police not to interfere.

The religious Knesset member Shlomo Lorenz saw the entire affair as extremely tragic. The affair would challenge the entire Israeli society by splitting it into half. Meaning, the opinion of society was divided into those supporting the Schuchmacher family and into those supporting the Starkes family.

Mea Shearim accused the police of violating human rights. The cops would use severe force while investigating in the neighbourhood. What does the government intend to show ? That it has more power than an old frum Jew (Nachman Starkes) and that the prime minister is higher than G – d ?

The police, on the other hand, justified themselves that they would act according to the facts. An old Jew immigrates from Russia, takes care of his grandson, then refuses to return him to his parents. Nachman Starkes would not recognize any authority but only G – d.

The police didn’t only act in Jerusalem but also in other places.

So far the description of former Mossad director Isser Harel.

Now let us continue with the details Ruth Blau gave in her book:

Rabbi Eliyahu Meizish called her up while she was visiting Israel. Ruth went to see him and the Rabbi told her about Yossele. For several months, some Haredim have been hiding an eight – year – old boy. Rabbi Meizish continued telling Ruth the background about Yossele’s parents and Nachman Starkes. Ida Schuchmacher had married a secular Jew and now she does everything he wants. The Rabbi claimed that the boy only loves his grandparents and if Ruth was willing to bring him out of the country. Furthermore, Ruth was told that this was a big Mitzvah. Ruth Blau had a hard time thinking about whether to agree and asked for some time to think it over.

The next day, Ruth went back to the Rabbi and told him that she agrees. Rabbi Meizish told her the name of Leibl Friedman (if this is really the real name !) from Bnei Brak. He should take her to the child.

My own opinion so far:

Rabbi Meizish used Ruth HaGioret (the convert) and this doesn’t surprise me. He would have never send a born haredi Jewess from Mea Shearim but rather told Ruth, whose final goal was total acceptance of haredi society, that everything was a Mitzvah. At first, Ruth may have had her doubts but, as she says, she found a way how to get the child abroad. Nevertheless, one of her thoughts may have definitely been “What do I get out of this ? What is in for me ?" As anxious as Ruth was, she anticipated a huge step forward in her haredi life. Afterwards she may profit from total acceptance although she was a convert and maybe she would also receive a respectable Shidduch.

There are times when born Haredim avoid getting involved into something but send out a convert and tell him about the great importance of the issue. Or to give it a name: “Exploitation”.

Nevertheless, I do see the point of the parents and I do see the point of the Starkes family. It is not an easy decision; especially when you consider that years before, the State of Israel (or then even Palestine) had rescued little frum children from the Shoah, brought them to Israel and put them into secular Kibbutzim. A huge important but, unfortunately, forgotten subject I am going to write about these days !

TO BE CONTINUED !

The Berland Shuvo Banim Scandal

B"H

I am not into the Breslover Baalei Teshuva Rabbi Berland Movement at all and many times I have critisized Rabbi Eliezer Berland for demanding 1000 Dollar from an ordinary person who wants to ask him for advice. Many times I have been attacked by people who are part of this particular movement or followers of another Rabbi of this kind, Lazer Brody.

Now, Rabbi Berland's Baal Teshuva Yeshiva "Shuvo Banim" in the Arab Quarter of Jerusalem's Old City has its scandal and it is mainly the haredi press jumping on it. Of course, there are articles by the secular press in Hebrew. In HAARETZ or in today's YEDIYOT ACHARONOT. Nevertheless, the haredi press seems to be more interested. There are different reasons for doing so: Rabbi Berland is very controversial among the real Breslover Chassidim from Mea Shearim. Lots of Breslover internal politics are involved and sometimes it is hard to figure out who is fighting who. Nothing is perfect on the Baal Teshuva sector because money and the strive for power play an important role.

The first video shows how Berland's bodyguards deal with people coming to his Yeshiva or special events. How the guards select people and how they beat others. How security cameras took over and what kind of a role the Rabbi's son Nachman Berland and his grandson Natan played. Natan obviously spoke openly about sex and drug abuse. There are also claims that Natan Berland took money from the Yeshiva.

Here are PART 2 and  PART 3 !

Natan Berland is talking about sex and drugs.

After the above videos were published, the Berland family denied its authentity. Everything would be a lie and the videos are faked. Now Rabbi Eliezer Berland himself spoke to his Chassidim on the phone and claimed that he was not locked away by his family but took a break due to his mental health problems. He does know about the violence of the guards and now wants to be closer to his followers and not being kept away (by his son and grandchild) anymore.

Who has an interest in releasing the first three videos showing what is going on at "Shuvo Banim" ? It obviously had to be an insider. Just look at the photos of the security cameras. Some say the Gabbaim have an interest but who knows.
However, I know one thing for sure: I would not spend any money in order to see Rabbi Eliezer Berland. Not even 5, not even 2 Shekels !

G - d, Meshiach and the fire catastrophe on the Carmel

B"H

One of the blog readers sent me this statement from the Breslover Rabbi Lazer Brody:

SUNDAY, 05 DECEMBER 2010

The Haifa Fire While the devastating forest fire on the outskirts of Haifa still blazes, a pointless national witch hunt is going on. Energies herewould be much better applied to soul-searching, teshuva, and learning emuna. We here at the Beams aren't going to participate of the finger-pointing festival. Nor shall we cry in lament like the secular media who says, "if we can't put out a forest fire, how can we defend ourselves?" We never did defend ourselves - it was Hashem that pulled us out of every fire; this is personal experience talking... We teach in the principles of emuna that everything Hashem does is forthe very best. Everyone asks, how can 42 losses of life and thousandsof acres of charred forests be for the best? The answer is in the following Midrash (Shir Hashirim 2:5, elaboratingon the passage, K'shoshana bane ha chuchim): Right before Moshiach comes, Hashem will burn the outskirts of Haifa.

http://lazerbrody.typepad.com/lazer_beams/2010/12/the-haifa-fire.html

I am not commenting this particular statement but will have a look into the Midrash myself. However, it is true that G - d decides whether Israel will win or loose and it is also Him fighting the wars for Israel !

Anything but Rabbi Nachman

B"H

Last night, Jerusalem's Breslover Nanas had a big party at the parking lot across the Supreme Court. I suppose that they were celebrating the Yahrzeit of their Rebbe Israel Odesser who died a while ago and is buried in Jerusalem.

While passing the event, I was just reminded of a small conversation I had with an elderly Breslover a few weeks ago. The Breslover was from Bnei Brak and one of these hippie artist type. Baal Teshuva and always expressing his Breslov joy. When I asked him if he maybe belongs to the Berland (Rabbi Eliezer Berland, the Baal Teshuva Rabbi in Breslov) or Arush (Rabbi Shalom Arush, another Baal Teshuva Rabbi and a former student of Berland) movement he told me that he is only following G - d. When he said so, he look towards heaven and even pointed up his finger.

In order to go a bit on his nerves I said that I actually prefer the original Breslover movement from Mea Shearim where Rabbi Schechter is the head of the communities. And, as we know, Rabbi Schechter doesn't really allow any newcomer coming too close. This is why Rabbi Berland had enough and founded his own movement.

The Breslover, however, made a very interesting response:
"I search and prefer Rabbi who uplift me. Who are bringing all kinds of Jews closer to Judaism. But I do not associate with those Rabbis who reject Jews and only concentrate on their own little community".

The Breslover was right and this was his personal opinion about Rabbi Schechter.

Despite our discussion, I started asking myself what it really means being a Breslover Chassid. Isn't the movement today a bit out of control and several Rabbis just took over and do their own "show" ? What about Rabbi Nachman and Rabbi Nathan ? Or are the Schechters, Arushs and others are more important today ?
