Anti - Zionists against BISSLI

B"H

The above Pashkevil (haredi news poster) is written in Yiddish and may have been published by Satmar. I am saying "may" but I am not giving my word for it !

The Israeli BISSLI is very popular among kids. Its being produced with different tastes and can be purchased for a relatively fair price. My favourite are the spicey ones.:-)

However, some anti - Zionists have discovered that the famous Israeli company OSEM has been providing its latest BISSLI bags with little stickers saying that from the sale of each bag, a certain amount of money is going to the Keren Kayemet (Planting Trees in Israel). And, as we all know, the Keren Kayemet is a Zionist organisation. As a result of this, the Pashkevil is warning the haredi population to refrain from buying those bags, as the purchase would support the Zionist state. On the other hand, BISSLI has a Hechsher of the Edah HaCharedit. But I am not claiming that the Edeh was informed about the sticker.:-)

Yiddishe Purim Fun

B"H

From the Torah Tidbits of the "Israel Center - Orthodox Union" in Jerusalem:

Haynt iz Purim

Morgen iz oys

Gib mir a groschen

Und varft mir aroys.

In English it just doesn't sound as funny as in Yiddish !

"Today is Purim

Tomorrow it is over

Give me a nickel

And throw me out".

Yiddish is not Dead !

B"H

Bring your Shleptops - Yiddish Convention at the Hebrew University Jerusalem

http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/134785

I don't refer to the Yiddish language in its common daily sense among secular Jews an today's theater plays. Not even to Isaac Bashevis Singer. I mostly see Yiddish as today's language of certain parts of haredi society. Not the Sephardi one, not the modern Baalei Teshuva from Chabad, Breslov or others but the language of chassidic Eastern Europe.

There is a woman in Mea Shearim who teaches Yiddish and I should finally move my "behind" and do some effort to get it fluent.

Swine Flu Protection in Yiddish

B"H

I haven't noticed them in Jerusalem but they are obvious in Tel Aviv: Posters with advise how to prevent the swine flu are almost everywhere. Even as a commercial in the cinema.

Here is a New York advertisement against the swine flu in Yiddish:

 Titel:

"Wasch die Händ" !

Top row from right to left:

1. Mach es nass - Make it wet
2. Seif - Soap
3. Reib - Rub
4. Schwank - Wash off
5. Wisch ab - Dry
6. Vermach das Wasser - Close the water
7. Giess ab - Rinse
8. Wisch ab - Dry
9. Say "Ascher Yazar"

"Asher Yazar" is the blessing after having been to the restroom. I do not get what no. 9 is trying to say us, as we wash our hands not only after being to the loo.

Nefuches ???

B"H

A few days ago I walked with a friend through Mea Shearim. Rushing from one Simchat Beit HaShoeva celebration to the next.
As you know, many streets in Mea Shearim are divided during Sukkot and sometimes it is hard looking for the right modest way. Especially women have to search and walk longer distances. The Mea Shearim market is half closed off to women but me and my friend found a way to get in. Not only us but also other women.
As we left the market, two or three Haredim entered and one of them seemed to be really mad seeing us women although this particular alleyway was not divided.
He yelled out loud "NEFUCHES !" and kept on walking.

My Yiddish is still not perfect and, until today, I don't know what NEFUCHES (NEFUCHOS) means. Maybe one of the readers can help out and let me know the translation.
However, I can imagine that it is not something nice.:-)

Pakshivilim versus (F)akshivilim

B"H

Somone who obvioulsy knows better Yiddish than I do told me that the correct Yiddish version for the haredi news posters is

PAKSHIVILIM and NOT (F)akshivilim !

I corrected the mistake at most places and look forward to improve my Yiddish. :-)

"Shavua HaSefer" at Kikar Rabin

B"H

Until June 20, the Hebrew Book Week (Shavua HaSefer) is taking place in Israel. Today I went to the event in Tel Aviv (Kikar Rabin - Rabin Square). I was ready to buy some interesting books but do you know this feeling that when you are looking for a good book, you don't exactly find what you want. This happened to me today.
The fair was full of relationship novels, books for children, history (especially the Holocaust) and, of course, the Kabbalah Center was there and made some more propaganda for itself. The majority of the books was in Hebrew and I saw maybe 10 books in English.
People who only know English and live in Tel Aviv should rather go to some local book stores instead visiting the fair at Kikar Rabin.

I was looking for something chassidic and, in the end, found reports written by secular Israeli academics on the chassidic world; mostly on chassidic history. I only bought one book and I am very happy with it.

As I understand Yiddish but my Yiddish speech is a disaster, I bought a very helpful Yiddish - Hebrew dictionary. Otherwise I was rather disappointed from the fair due to the high prices. Only 30% discount on most of the books. The book stores in the neighbourhood are offering discounts up to 50%.

Hopefully my way to talk in Yiddish is improving soon but I am optimistic, as I know German. My only problem is the Hungarian Yiddish which is sometimes hard to follow. However, it does make a difference when you speak to the Chassidim in Yiddish and not "only" in Hebrew, as I used to do so far.

Kuntres from Toldot Aharon

B"H

Although I am not a member of the chassidic sect Toldot Aharon and do not agree to many of their ideas, the more I learn about them, the more I understand why they do certain things in such and such a way. By reading their writings, I gained lots of respect for them.

Toldot Aharon are very much into modesty. Especially women have to keep a very strict dressing code. Here a short opinion of the Toldot Aharon founder, Rabbi Aharon Roth, on women and their modesty. The text is in Yiddish and I hope that most of you do understand it. Anyway, should there be any difficulties, I am willing to translate it into English.
