Rabbi Daniel Frish and his book "Kedusha and Zniut"

B"H

Some time ago, I started writing about Rabbi Daniel Frish and his book "Kedusha and Zniut". Now I would like to pick up the topic once again and continue writing about Rabbi Frish's modesty ideas. I find some of them very extreme and was shocked while reading the book. However, this way, you may understand the ideology of Chassidut Toldot Aharon much better, as the Rabbi's book provides interesting insights into an unknown world.

Rabbi Daniel Frish used to be a Toldot Aharon Chassid before he split off together with the Toldot Avraham Yitzchak Rebbe Shmuel Yaakov Kahn. Rabbi Frish was, what we would call, more than extreme and many Toldot Aharon Chassidim were wondering why he went to the more "open" group of Avraham Yitzchak. Rabbi Frish responded that before the previous Rebbe Avraham Yitzchak Kahn (the father of the two present TA and TAY Rebbes) passed away, he had promised him to take care of his older son Rebbe Shmuel Yaakov.

Many people are asking for the Toldot Aharon Takanot and some of them, actually the very first ones by Rebbe Aharon Roth, were published in one of the books of the Toldot Aharon. However, the entire Takanot book remains closed to the wider public. Furthermore people wonder how the strict Toldot Aharon Takanot for a marriage, modesty and intimate relations look like. A "secret" book young couples receive shortly before they get married.

This modesty book should also not be such a secret. I assume that it is the modesty book written by Rabbi Daniel Frish "Kedusha veZniut - Holiness and Modesty". Among others, Rabbi Frish wrote in his book about the male Mitzvah of "being fruitful and multiply",  about the fight against the Yetzer, the time of intimate relations between husband and wife, how a person should behave in bed, about women's modesty and clothing and about Shidduchim (blind dates).

The Rabbi's views sound very extreme to the outside world but consider that those rules were basically written for the Toldot Aharon and they, on the other hand, consider themselves as someone special and thus on a higher level.
____________________________

The first chapter of Rabbi Daniel Frish's book "Kedusha ve'Zniut - Holiness and Modesty" mainly deals with the commandment to get married and have children. A male has to get married in order to fulfill the first Torah commandment "Be fruitful and multiply". Those who do not marry at a certain age and, instead, waste their semen (zera), cause the Shechinah (G - d's presence) to move further away from the Jews.

A man without a wife is not called MAN.
It says in the kabbalistic Zohar that a man not fulfilling the commandment "Be fruitful and multiply" causes the Shechinah to move away from the earth. Meaning, the further G - d's presence is moving away, the more our planet is vulnerable to catastrophes such as earthquakes, Tsunamis, wars, etc.

The Mitzvah for a man to "Be fruitful and multiply" does not only apply to Jews but also to Gentiles and even to animals. The Shechinah (G - d's presence) only spreads through Neshamot (souls) which were created in the upper spiritual worlds (Beriah). Those Neshamot are being send down in a human body into our physical world. When a man does not have children, he does bring down those Neshamot into our material world (Asiah). Rabbi Frish's commentary on this subject is quite threatening because he sees a man without children on a lower level than a kosher animal. It goes without saying that there are men in this world who are unable to have children (due to various medical reasons) and those people are exempt from the Mitzvah.

Through having children, man is like G - d because he creates a new human being. The world is not only for enjoying oneself and sleep, eat and drink. Following a materialistic lifestyle is selfish and humankind was created to listen and follow its creator.

When a man is getting married, he causes the Ge'ulah (redemption) to come closer, as it says in Talmud Yevamot 62b: "There won't be a (Meshiach) ben David until all created Neshamot will be / have been brought into this world".

Singles only have half of the body because they are not complete (with their soul mate).
_________________________

This all sounds very frightening but, nevertheless, as humans, we run against all kinds of laws and commandments. In the Jewish religious world it is more than common that people get married at a young age. Haredim sometimes even earlier than national religious Jews.
I have nothing against a marriage but one has to find the right match. I am not just running around in order to catch someone and have children in order to fulfill the Mitzvah (although the Mitzvah applies to men only). The older you get, the higher your expectations of a future spouse. When you are young, well, what do you want ? Maybe someone studying Torah or men dream of an "Eshet Chayil - Righteous Woman".

It is not that easy to fulfill this Mitzvah; especially when you did not get married as a teenager. But even if, divorce is always possible.
I may have this Hollywood mentality with love and things but in my eyes, a marriage has to be a successful one and then you think of children. My parents were divorced and I know how it is growing up in a home falling apart. So, I think twice and even three times before I ever get married

Does the Mitzvah "Be fruitfull and multiply" above happiness and love ? Maybe the Toldot Aharon (and later Toldot Avraham Yitzchak) Rabbi Daniel Frish may have thought this way. In his circles, people, of course, do not give too much about love but more about a common goal. You get used to each other and build a family. You have children and they make your life.

Nevertheless, when I read all his opinions and even the definitions in the Talmud, my "selfishness" is coming out and telling me about LOVE. And, like Hollywood, I do believe in it.

"Be fruitful and multiply", this is the first Mitzvah G - d ever gave to humankind. To humankind and not only to Adam and Eve (Chava) in Gan Eden (Paradise). However, this Mitzvah applies to men only !

Rabbi Daniel Frish (former Toldot Aharon Chassid, later he became a member of the Toldot Avraham Yitzchak) explains his understanding of "Be fruitful and multiply" in his book "Kedusha veZniut - Holiness and Modesty" (a modesty code for Chassidut Toldot Aharon). According to his understanding, however, not only Jews received this commandment but also all the other nations (see "Kedusha veZniut", Chapter 1). Even the animal kingdom has to fulfill this "Mitzvah".

The Talmud Tractate Yevamot 62 teaches us what our Sages actually consider as fulfilling the Mitzvah "Be fruitful and multiply"; meaning, how many children should a man have in order to fulfill the Mitzvah in the best way ?

Talmud Yevamot also teaches us about the Machloket (discourse) between the House of Shammai and the House of Hillel. Two famous Rabbis who hardly ever agreed on each others opinions. I once read somewhere that in the times of Meshiach, we actually will go according to the stricter viewpoints of Shammai. Until then, we go according to the more moderate Hillel.

Shammai said that a man only fulfills the Mitzvah when he has two sons and two daughters. According to Hillel a man must have at least one daughter and one son.

Shammai based his opinion on Adam and Eve who had two sons and, as the Midrash and other sources tell us, three daughters. When Cain got killed, Seth (Shet) took over the role of the second son.

The question is whether this Mitzvah also applies to a convert to Judaism ?
Reish Lakish has his doubts (in Yevamot 62) because a male convert who has children from his non - Jewish past has a problem, as the children are not considered Jewish and thus he cannot fulfilled the Mitzvah.

Pre - Tu be'Shevat

B”H

In about three weeks, we are going to celebrate Tu be’Shevat – 15th day in the jewish month of Shevat. A biblical holiday called the "New Year of the trees" (see Talmud Rosh Hashana).

For a few weeks already, Israeli supermarket chains have been selling dried fruit and nuts for Tu be'Shevat. This evening I took a few photos at a "Shufersal" branch in Tel Aviv:

Every bag containing dried fruits (raisins, apricots, apples, etc.) or nuts for 10 Shekel (approx. 3 Dollar).

SHEARIM Blog quoted regarding Satmar and Belz

B"H

My SHEARIM blog was quoted on ARUTZ 7 today. The Belzer Rebbe and one of the two Satmarer Rebben, Rabbi Aharon Teitelbaum, may be striving for peace between the two chassidic groups. Honestly, I am not too excited about the peace rumours, as there is another person in the game called Rebbe Zalman Leib Teitelbaum. The second present Satmarer Rebbe Zalman Leib is anything but on good terms with his brother Aharon in Kiryat Yoel.

The Belzer Rebbes wife and Rebbe Aharon's wife are sisters and, of course, both Rebbes have been in touch with each other. On very good terms, as far as I heard. Both against Rebbe Zalman Leib und the third sticking onto them is one of the three present Vishnitzer Rebben, Rabbi Israel Hager (the brother of the two mentioned wives).

The question is whether Rebbe Aharon Teitelbaum is able to risk an official peace with Chassidut Belz because his brother, Rebbe Zalman Leib Teitelbaum, may use this against him. Rebbe Zalman Leib has already picked on his brother for having a wife who went to a school where teachers and students speak in Hebrew and not in Yiddish. Furthermore, ARUTZ 7 is mentioning the Site "Vos iz Neias" which is partially financed by Kiryat Yoel (as far as I was told).

So, we will see how things are going to develope ...

Can a Jew have Gentile friends ?

B”H

May a Jew befriend non - Jews ?

Diaspora Jews probably regard this kind of question as something odd. How can you not have Gentile friends when a Jew lives in the Diaspora unless you are a Haredi from Brooklyn, Kiryat Yoel, Monsey or Crown Heights ? The same with Israel's frum population: No religious child would see a need for having Gentile friends because its entire world consists of a Jewish kindergarden, a Jewish school, Jewish classmates and friends.

The Torah itself states that a Jew should not be too friendly with a Gentile. One of the reasons may be that when Jews and Gentiles befriend each other, they will sit together and eat and drink. Example: A Jew sitting in the house of his Gentile friends and eating. The problem occuring is that the food won't be kosher. It is not sufficient when a cooked meal consists of kosher ingredients but a Jew has to turn on the stove in order to start the cooking process. In case he doesn't, he can still stir the food while cooking. Another problem is that the dishes in a Gentile home are not kosher.

The Torah teaches that G - d created Jews + Gentiles. Each of them has his own task in life. If Jews and Gentiles were one unit, G - d would have created only one people but He didn't. Meaning, there must be a difference between the two. Jews are able to cause a "Tikkun - Soul Rectification" by keeping Mitzvot and Gentile, on the other hand, should follow the "Seven Noachide Laws".

The Torah commands us to be nice to Gentiles. There is no reason why we shouldn't. Not every great person in this world has to be Jewish, and there are many great non - Jews in this world. Furthermore, we have to keep our contracts with them and be fair business partners.

I have a lot to say about my own experiences while living in Germany. All of my friends were Gentiles. Well, except for some members of the local Jewish community I knew. However, I wouldn't really call them "friends" but rather acquaintances.

When you live at certain places in the Diaspora where there aren't too many Jews around, you won't have too many chances of finding Jewish friends. Hence, most of your friends will be Gentile. Although you may think that Gentile friends are great people to have and that nothing can keep you apart - reality looks different. There is always a certain point in life when you feel alone. Abandoned and misunderstood by your Gentile friends. The times when your beloved friends step away from you can occur at different times and as a result of various events. For instance, when you insist on "a Jew should marry a Jew". My Gentile friends probably felt left out when I made this kind of statement. Another point is that Germans are easily offended by telling them that they are guilty of the Holocaust. Germans from the younger generation don't see any reason for taking the responsibility for the Holocaust and also point out that not every German was a Nazi but also a resistant fighter.

It doesn't matter whether you are a German, American, British or any other Jew: We all know the feeling of how it is when suddenly our Gentile friends start criticizing us because we are Jewish. The reasons differ but suddenly we are becoming aware of how terribly alone we are. Furthermore, we feel the need for a Jewish friend. Kabbalah is calling this effect a "special need for a soul connection". Jewish souls are connected and there are times when we feel the desire for having this connection. For someone who feels like us and does unterstand. Someone we have something in common with.

Talmud Avodah Zarah 2a

B”H

There are times when I get really caught up in certain study matters. I would like to give you one example from a few years ago, where I had a special question and in order to find an answer, I asked all kinds of people and searched through any Talmudic commentary you can imagine. Eventually a Litvishe Jerusalem Kollel sent me an interesting answer.

For those who are interested: It is necessary to have a bit of Talmudic understanding ! However, I am going to continue the subject in order to confront you with further Talmudic commentaries.

My question to the Kollel was:

The Mishna in Masechet Avodah Zarah / Amud 2a is talking about 3 days before the idol – worshipper’s holiday where you should not do business with them.

According to Tosafot, the Yerushalmi and the RAMBAM (Mishna Torah), the in the above mentioned Mishna OVDEI KOCHAVIM are only in Eretz Israel and abroad they are called (Shomrei) MINHAG AVOTEIHEM.

Could you please explain what (Shomrei) Minhag Avoteihem means, as, so far, I haven’t found a proper answer.

If people in Chutz La’Aretz follow the Minhagim of their fathers, isn’t it Avodat Kochavim or idol – worship too ? What is the difference ?

And here is the response from Rabbi Sigler:

Minhag Avoteihem be’Yadeihem means that they don’t take their religion very seriously – they are just going through the motions. What this means practically is that – for example – meat from animals that they slaughtered is Mutar be’Hana’a (it’s not kosher but we can feed it to our dogs) because they did not have their idol in mind when they slaughtered it (Talmud Tractate Chullin 13a). It does not mean that what they do is not considered idol – worship and that they are permitted to do it under Noachide law.

Ovdei Kochavim in Eretz Israel take their religion more seriously but, according to the Gemara (Chullin 13b), not seriously enough to be considered Minim. A Min is someone who is Aduk (mentally attached) to his particular idol – worship (Rashi). Meat from an animal that he slaughters is Asur be’Hana’a (forbidden to derive any benefit from) because we assume that he slaughtered it in the name of his idol. Therefore, even in the times of Chazal only a small minority of non – Jews were bonafide idol – worshippers. The rest – even in Eretz Israel – were going through the motions to one degree or another.
