The founder of the famous "Aish HaTorah Yeshiva", Rabbi Noah Weinberg, passed away at the age of 78 yesterday (Thursday). The funeral will be held this early afternoon and preceed from Kiryat Zanz to the Mount of Olives (Har HaZe'itim)
I didn't know Rabbi Weinberg personally but despite all many negative things said about Aish, I do think that he was doing a good job and turned the Yeshiva into what it is today. Outreach and Hasbara are always important issues and Rabbei Weinberg was definitely one of the most successful people doing that.

I respectfully disagree with you, Miriam. Rabbi Weinberg was a great rabbi, and during his time of active leadership, Aish was excellent as well. But as Aish got larger and more difficult to manage, and the rabbi got older and had more difficulty managing it, the organization was beset by problems, from incessant fundraising to extremism that directly conflicted with its stated goals. Heck, some of the smaller out-of-town branches, ie St. Louis, etc., became virtual fiefdoms, tragically straying from their supposed ideals.

ReplyDeleteI believe you.
Founding AISH was a good idea and I just know the organization in Jerusalem and not in the States.
After AISH became too big, Rabbi Weinberg lost control, but this is happening to any bigger organization. However, Rabbi Weinberg definitely knew how to raise funds.
