The Will of the Shomrei Emunim Rebbe z"l

B"H

Rebbe Avraham Chaim Roth who just passed away ten days ago, definitely had his experience with expecting to become Rebbe but, in the end, his father's Chassidim chose someone else as their new Rebbe. This happened to Rebbe Roth after his father, Rebbe Aharon Roth (Ratha), passed away in 1947.

I assume that Rebbe Avraham Chaim Roth didn't want his sons to experience what he went through and thus stipulated in his will that all of them (supposedly five) are going to share the Rebbe position. However, there is a catch. One of his sons is in jail and the others have to wait for his release. Only then the sons are able to become Rebbes.

The idea is not bad but having someone as a Rebbe who was in jail ? However, just in order to clarify the circumstances: Does anyone know why one of the Shomrei Emunim Rebbe's sons is serving a sentence in prison ?

  1. why is this son in jail? Because he repeatedly raped his niece aged 8-17 over many years, when she was a foster child in the house of her grandfather (the rebbe), after they had to take all the children of the family out of their parent's house and distribute them among other families...

As far as I remember Friediker Rebbe was also serving time in prison. Of course he was accused of counter-revolutionary activities in Soviet Russia thus the perspective is a little bit different. But since we don't know why Shomrei Emunim Rebbe's son is in jail...

Here is another link on the Shomrei Emunim Rebbe's son:

It looks like he was imprisoned in 1997 but the question is for how long and when is he being released ?

The court documents say that he repeatedly raped the daughter of his brother who was then eight years old. Not only rape but he also sodomized her. Not only once but for years.

I don't know the case and I have no idea about the situation within the ROTH family. Who is talking to whom and whether the Rebbe was visiting his son in jail. And why is Yaakov Roth (Ratha) still in jail ?

However, I assume that it will be difficult leading a chassidic group when one son has such a criminal background. Especially as he raped his brother's daughter. How can the brothers ever work or communicate together ?

Rebbe Avraham Chaim Roth was leading the Shomrei Emunim for 65 years. It was him who was accepted and he alone was the symbol of the group. I would say that the future existence of Chassidut Shomrei Emunim will be more than difficult.

  4. He is scheduled to come out of prison on may 19, 2013, that's in one of the documents I linked...

Well, he could open a sub-group of shomrei emunim that is especially Makpid on early marriage (in order to prevent zenut).

According to halacha, it is permitted, they do not recognise the Israeli state, so there is no issue of Dina de malchuta, and I am sure hassidim will feel honored if their eight-year-old daughters have an opportunity to marry the rebbe himself!

All three of his judges were women.:-)

Yaakov Roth really exploited the girl who was in a difficult situation anyway. 16 years in jail ... He must have done something really really bad.

I think that the Rebbe family should put their personal life into order and when I hear about the difficult situation in the girl's family (that children were given to relatives because father and mother couldn't deal with the situation). If an Admor's family is not an example for the Chassidim, so what are they ?

I went to the Mea Shearim Tish a few times and found the Shomrei Emunim women very difficult to talk to. Or in other words: They weren't interested in talking to anyone.
I know one of their women but, due to her husband, I doubt whether she would be ready telling me anything.

  7. Well, I suppose there is an "official" version of the facts within the group, that amounts to zionist conspiracy against the poor, innocent rebbe's son...

However, I find it interesting that the frum blogs mention the fact that he is in jail... So I would think that it is their way of showing their outrage....

Israeli haredi news websites also mentioned the son being in jail and the comments to the articles were pretty bad. Many Haredi expressed their dislike about the Rebbe's will stating that also the imprisoned son will be Rebbe.

The Shomrei Emunim may claim what they want but I am sure that all of Mea Shearim, Bnei Brak and anybody else knows the truth.

It is so disgusting, as there are commentators calling him a Zaddik.

  10. Thank you for these interesting links.

the same reaction happens over and over again: blame the victim, protect the perpetrator.

I think that those cases show clearly that many of those "ultra-orthodox" organisations are outside of normative judaism, just like the conservatives or reform.

As institutions, as organisations they act against torah values, in favour of hypocrisy, against honesty, cruelly and without rachamim, defending the strong instead of the weak.

this seems to be quite endemic in hareidi culture... So: hareidi is just as reform as reform, just on other topics. Not Shabbat and kashrut, but child abuse and hypocrisy.

A psychologist would guess that there are people who are totally unable facing the truth or / and reality.

We don't see this only with the Shomrei Emunim Rebbe's imprisoned son but look at the case of Rabbi Motti Elon. There are students who claim that he raped them and there are those who simply deny the facts and still see him as a Zaddik.
