Do you call this MODESTY or DISINFORMATION ?
The Israeli litvishe newspaper "Yated Ne'eman" changed the picture of the new Israeli cabinett. Two women were simply cut out of the photo. Thanks to Photoshop !
The above picture is the original and shows the two female ministers Limor Livnat (Sports and Culture) as well as Sofa Landver (Immigration and Absorption). Right behind and next to Prime Minister Netanyahu.
The photo below is the offical government photo from "Yated Ne'eman" where the women were cut out.
"Yated Ne'man" claimed that no female pictures are published in the haredi press and even Zipi Livni was cut out.
If you like showing female faces out of modesty, so don't publish the pictures at all but don't start faking ! Otherwise we may ask the question: What else are you censoring ?

ReplyDeleteI don't know.
Maybe they didn't publish it at all. Otherwise the secular as well as the foreign press would have jumped on it. But I do think that the Hamvser did the same as Yated Ne'eman, as MAARIV mentioned something.
I got tired of buying these papers a year or two ago. I just found that in many cases, the news was not being reported accurately. The straw that finally broke the camel's back was when the famous Washington Heights community in Manhattan held a large Yahretzeit seudoh for Rav Hirsch. It was very big news, and reported on extensively on the radio, on the blogs, in the newspapapers, because the new Rabbi got up and said "Torah im derech eretz is not our way anymore. This was something of the past." That community which prides itself on Rav Hirsch was then split. The president of 20 years quit right on the spot, and other speakers got up and people started making nasty remarks. It was terrible. But according to Hamodia, this event was the most beautiful commemoration of Rav Hirsch and all that he stood for. They printed "the evening was such a kiddush Hashem." And they went on about how beautiful the evening was, when in fact it was a complete chillul Hashem. That was too much for me. This is one of MANY examples of censorship in the haredi press. Not to mention published books, such as the famous censorship that went on when Rav Aharon Kotler's biography came out. Because we all know that if they left the picture of him standing with Rabbi Soloveitchik in the book then all the nice young frum people would have run out and become apikorsim. What could I say, this issue really bothers me.

ReplyDeleteTalking about the haredi press:
Just look at Hamodiah which is boycotted by many Chassidim, as the paper is ruled by Chassidei Gur. And most chassidic groups, especially those from the Agudah, are still furious about Gur. The reason is the mayor elections in Jerusalem last November when the Gerrer Rebbe and his right - hand Yaakov Litzman started a whole campaign against the haredi candidate Me'ir Porush.
After Porush lost to the secular Nir Barkat (who was promoted by Gur), the haredi world called for canceling Hamodiah subscriptions.
Every newspaper, also the haredi ones, has its own interest and publishes articles according to the opinion of the people behind it. Hamodiah with Gur and Yated Ne'eman with Rabbi Eliyashiv.
