We are commended to be HAPPY during Sukkot. The entire eight (nine in the Diaspora) days we have to be happy.
Can you imagine being happy all those days ?
The Vilna Gaon said that this is one of the most difficult Mitzvot the Jewish people got:
Being happy a few days on a row.
