The other day I found a pamphlet laying out at our bakery. Someone had left it in the shop window and I read it out loud to some modern Orthodox employees.
The content of the pamphlet was about the "modest woman" and how she should dress and behave:
- Women don’t wear short skirts or sleeves.
- Don't wear skirts where others can look through.
- Don't wear tight clothes where the shape of your body can be seen.
- Don't wear red. (Red is seen as the colour of the prostitutes).
- Don't put on too much make - up.
- Don't speak to strange men.
Suddenly a voice of a female colleague came from the back of the shop:
"Don't breathe !"
Sarcastically speaking, is a religious woman allowed to breathe or is this also forbidden and immodest ?
I was just wondering why this endless list concerned women only. What about immodest men ?

Was it you Miriam that reported last week that in one of the seminaries girls who get married are being paid $275 not to wear makeup at the wedding? Read it somewhere.

ReplyDeleteNo, it wasn't me.:-)
But generally: Wearing make - up is extremely popular among haredi girls and women. Even at the Toldot Aharon !
