Satmarer wearing old Yerushalmi Clothes ?

B"H

A week ago, the youngest daughter of the Toldot Aharon Rebbe David Kahn got married to the grandson of the Satmarer Rosh Beit Din, Rabbi Israel Chaim Menashe Friedman. The name of the groom is Natan but, unfortunately, I don't know the name of the bride.

While looking at the wedding photos, I started wondering why the groom, as a Satmarer, was wearing the old Yerushalmi clothes. If outsiders didn't know that Natan Friedman is from Satmar, one could have got the impression that he is Toldot Aharon.

Is there a tradition getting married in old Yerushalmi clothes or why did a Satmarer wore such clothing ?

There is no such tradition in Satmar to get married in old Yerushalmi clothes. It was just to honor the Kallah's family and father. Two years ago, a Satmar Chosid got married with a woman who had very string tights with Lubavitch, and their wedding was celebrated as a "Lubavitch" wedding. I know some other Satmarers who married non-Satmar women and did follow the minhagim of the Kallah just for the wedding ceremony. It is just a way t honor the Kallah's family by adopting a certain minhag of her family.

Does this mean that Natan Friedman was only wearing the Yerushalmi wardrobe at the wedding itself and not later on in his daily life ?

The Kallah, however, seems to have a "free" life, as she is not bound anymore to the strict TA Takanot but may adopt Satmar customs.

  4. I was going to suggest as a "maybe" the answer given by Moshe.
So my mind did make a bit of sense :)

For the rest, I'd guess it will have to do with WHERE the newlyweds will be residing from then on.

Well, at least, as a Satmarer woman, she is allowed to wear a Scheitel and "regular" clothes. Not only black or dark coloured clothing only. And she doesn't need to wear black stockings all the time.:-)
