I have heard different versions about the position of Eli Wiesel among American Jewry. Quite a few American Jews have told me that it was Wiesel himself taking the position of a kind of Jewish leader in the United States. No one really appointed him and many American Jews don't see anything in him.

Now, Wiesel was visiting the Belzer Admor in Jerusalem and said that his father actually was a Vishnitzer Chassid.It is known that Eli Wiesel was born in Sighet / Romania and spent his early days in a Cheder. After Auschwitz, however, his life seemed to undergo a drastic change.
