Kapparot in Jerusalem

B"H

The KAPPAROT before Yom Kippur are nothing more but a custom ! Some great Rabbis say it is a foolish custom others see it as a Tikun (rectification of one's soul).

I don't participate in the Kapparot but if you are planning to do so: You can  participate either by giving a certain amount of money (about 20 Shekels / 5 Dollar and more) as Zedakah for a Yeshiva etc. The second possibility is buying a chicken alive and a Shochet is going to slaughter it ritually on the spot. The chicken is being circled over your head and, symbolically speaking, the sins are being transferred into the chickens. Then it will be slaughtered and you can either give it to the poor or take it home and eat it.

Killing thousands of chickens is causing an outcry of animal activists every single year anew. Demonstrations against Kapparot with chickens are taking place all over Jerusalem. Nevertheless, especially the Ashkenazi haredi society doesn't give in and insists on Kapparot with chickens. Many other Jews have switched to money (see photos below).

I took the following photos in Jerusalem last year:

GILO is WEST Jerusalem

B"H

It is unbelievable how the whole world is trying to decide over Jerusalem. Just a reminder: Jerusalem is and has been a JEWISH city and Mrs Angela Merkel has no right telling the Israeli government where to build. It is known that the German Chancellor hates the guts out of Israeli settlers and last Friday, on Rosh Hashana, Mrs Merkel phoned Benjamin Netanyahu and started yelling at him.

The Israeli government is going to build 1100 new apartments in the Gilo neighbourhood. An ordinary Jerusalem neighbourhood about 15 minutes far away from the city center. Well, it depends on what bus you take and how the traffic is, as the way may be even shorter.

Not only Angela Merkel went mad and believed the Palestinian propaganda claiming that Gilo is an Israeli settlement. The US government was following suit.

Most people outside Jerusalem have no clue about GILO and here are a few insights:

Found on Facebook: "Two Beggars in Rome"

Two beggars are sitting side by side on a street in Rome. One has a cross in front of him, the other one the Star of David.

Many people go by, look at both beggars, but only put money into the hat of the beggar sitting behind the cross.

A priest comes by, stops and watches throngs of people giving money to the beggar behind the cross, but none to the beggar behind the Star of David.

Finally, the priest goes over to the beggar behind the Star of David and says, "My poor fellow, don't you understand? This is a Catholic country; this city is the seat of Catholicism. People aren't going to give you money if you sit there with a Star of David in front of you, especially when you're sitting beside a beggar who has a cross. In fact, they would probably give to him just out of spite.?

The beggar behind the Star of David listened to the priest, turned to the other beggar with the cross and said:

"Moshe, look who's trying to teach the Goldstein brothers how marketing works."

HA'TACHANAH - The old Tel Aviv Train Station, Part 1

B”H

Tiberias used to have the GROSSMANN family and the Tel Aviv counterpart was the WIELAND family. Templars, Christian missionaries from Germany who used to move to Israel at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1941, the British who were then occupying Palestine, deported those Templars to Australia. Not because of their Christian origin but due to the fact that the Templars were supporting Adolph Hitler in Germany. Also the Grossmanns and well as the Wielands got deported.

A week ago, I was visiting the building complex of the old train station in Tel Aviv. Not too far from the beach. At Jerusalem Street leading into Yaffo. Just pass Neve Zedek towards the beach, turn to the right (Eilat Street) and you will find the famous TACHANAH - STATION.

In 1900, the Templar Hugo Wieland moved with his family to Palestine and settled next to the train station. In 1902, he built his villa and three years later a factory producing construction as well as agricultural products. Today the building complex consists of 22 buildings and serves as a cultural center. Not too religious but very interesting to visit. The TACHANAH offers concerts, exhibitions and lectures. and is an absolute MUST for every Tel Aviv visitor !

The old train station was a direct connection to the nearby town Yaffo. The main building of the station was built in 1892. The train went from Yaffo via Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Today the entire building complex is a closed area with a security guard at the entrance gate. There is NO entrance fee but the fancy restaurants are definitely not cheap. Those of you who desperately need a cup of coffee like me: Go to “Café Greg” across the old “Wieland Villa”.

Surrounding in front of the Tachanah (Station). The sea and the tower of Yaffo in the back.

At the entrance: The main building built in 1892. Recently renovated. Inside you can find a tourist information office and a cafe.

A view to the left: The white building on the right used to be the freight terminal of the train station.

Also near the entrance gate: An old railway wagon.

To be honest, I just felt like in Germany. Everything is so clean and tidy. Even the building look so typical German.:-)))

The "Jerusalem" of Lithuania: VILNA

B"H

The Israeli Holocaust Museum YAD VASHEM is publishing a short documentary on the Jews in Lithuania. Once, Vilna played an extremely important role in Jewish history. Most people identify the toen with the Vilna Gaon who once fought the new chassidic movement. However, many Jews don't know that also quite a few Chassidim used to live in Vilna.

Today, only photos remain from the great Jewish history of Lithuania.

"Loneliness" or The "Being Invited" Holiday Pressure

B”H

Especially before Pessach and Rosh Hashana, the holiday pressure reaches its peak. When saying this, I am only referring to ISRAEL, simply as I don’t know about other places in the world.

In the secular world, neighbours, friends and even the press give people a feeling of doing something for the Pessach Seder as well as for the first night of Rosh Hashana. Then, according your ebvironment, you need a family in order to be invited. If not, so, at least, go away. Either travel abroad or stay at an Israeli hotel. Thus, it doesn’t come as a surprise that the suicide rate is much higher on those two days because lonely people feel their painful situation.

I was talking to someone the day before yesterday but cannot remember how we got to the subject. Anyway, he suddenly said: “Do you see all those people here ? Over there, the family with the three kids. They are all people no one wanted for the holiday. This is why they are here in Tel Aviv”.

Right away I knew that the person saying this was 100% correct. It is very sad but realistic.

Let’s say you are a new immigrant without a family in Israel; where are you going to spend the Pessach Seder or the first night on Rosh Hashana ? No one is inviting you and you end up thinking about spending the high holidays alone at home while everyone else is sitting together with his family ? But, let me tell you, it doesn’t only concern new immigrants but many many Israelis too. No matter if singles or families.

I have always had the attitude of “arranging something on my own” but others are desperate for sitting with a family. I, on the other hand, like being alone sometimes and I am not desperate for sitting with other people. In particular, Yeshiva students are looking for places with friends or families. I have been through all this and what I found out where two things: First of all, many families don’t really want guests when a Yeshiva is calling up and asking whether they can send some students over. In fact, a former friend of mine told me, that she went to a family with another two or three Yeshiva girls and the family showed its dislike. They had just agreed taking the girls as a kind of Mitzvah but nothing more.

The second thing I learnt is that from a certain age, you are expected either to have your own family or make arrangements on your own. In your own home. I a kind of did it this Rosh Hashana and it was the best celebration I have ever had. No pressure with finding a place but just a small celebration with a very few people. All arranged due to our own efforts. Neither depending on anyone nor sitting with strangers I don’t really know.

My personal opinion is that constantly sitting with other people shows your dependency on others. Instead of taking your own initiative, you are running after others and, many times, you don’t even realize that you are going on their nerves.

Live your own life and arrange your own holiday celebrations ! No matter how much or less money you have but don’t depend on others and try pleasing them because you are so desperate. If you are desperate, then you are lonely, without self - esteem and this is very sad.

A New Blog Template ?

B"H

BLOGGER has been making some modernization adjustments and is now offering new Blog Templates. I used to study marketing in the past and thus learnt that different "products" become a brand because they represent a certain colour or design. The most famous example may be COCA COLA with its colour RED.

As we also learnt in our marketing semester, the colour read stands for ENERGY. Product colours represent a style and / or a feeling and Coca Cola is definitely causing you the feeling "I must have a cool bottle of coke now !"

Once a product has become a brand and is being identified with a certain image, logo or colour, it is very hard to make changes.

I am not as famous a Coca Cola or anything like it but I would love to make some design changes on my blogs. Therefore I am asking the Germans on my German Blogs and you and this international Blog.

Would you mind any "radical" design changes on this blog or could you get used to it ?
