The day before yesterday, Sunday, a huge Bar Mitzvah took place in Chassidut Belz (Jerusalem). One of the grandsons of the Belzer Rebbe named Zvi celebrated his Bar Mitzvah.
Why did the Belzer show up in white socks at the Bar Mitzvah ?
It is a Belzer custom to wear black socks on Shabbat but white socks on holidays or Smachot (Belzer simches).
In Skver they wear black leather knee-high boots. This is because when the Skverer Rebbe lived Belz (I believe he married the Belzer Rebbe's daughter), he was embarrased because he didn't wear the white socks on yontif. In order that the Belzer Rebbe didn't see, he started wearing the tall black boots.

ReplyDeleteThe Skverer Rebbe from New Square is married to the daughter of the old Vishnitzer Rebbe from Bnei Brak. The present Belzer Rebbe is his brother - in - law and the Satmarer, Rebbe Aharon, is his second brother - in - law. All their wives are the daughters of the Vishnitzer Rebbe.
However, the Vishnitzer also wear white socks on Shabbat, I guess whereas Belz only wears black socks on Shabbat.
